The Otero County Sheriff's Department is increasing patrols on U.S. Highway 82, specifically in the safety corridor that lies between mile markers 1 and 16, according to Undersheriff Norbert Sanchez.
Speeding fines are doubled inside a safety corridor. The Highway 82 safety corridor runs from Alamogordo to Cloudcroft.
Sanchez said his department received a $10,000 grant through the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program, which is awarded through the state.
The money will go to offset the cost of overtime for added patrols, Sanchez said.
He said deputies will mostly look for people speeding, but will also cite drivers for illegal passing and other traffic offenses.
The heightened patrols will run through September.
