Ga. State Patrol head-on radar

I recently started a job that requires a lot of driving and my LEO encounters are up...

My last 2 were with GSP heading towards me on 2 lane blacktops. After the first ( warning ) I got an 8500 x50 and got a little cocky...

The 2nd ( Ticket for 69 in a 50, I stabbed the brakes from 80+) my RD got a full strength hit and I was looking at his charger and saw him turning around in my mirror.

My RD hadn't even blipped and I was going down slope as he topped a hill about a half mile in front of me.

Was I just unlucky, and what kind of equipment is GSP using?

I'm thinking about getting a V1 and a laser jammer. Most of my traveling is on blacktop, I-75 below Macon, I-16 all the way (Dublin, man at the fuzz...) and I-20 to Augusta.

I think a V1 and an LI would be a good investment. Won't save you from I/O, but will help a good deal. You're likely to quickly learn the favorite spots on 16 and 20; might want to look at Trapster for the iPhone or a similar program.

I'm guessing I/O is instant on? Is that what got me?

I really didn't want to ask him about radar equipment!

Yeah, your description of the encounter sounds like I/O to me. And it sounds like the cop knew to only trigger his radar once every few to five minutes or otherwise you likely would have a weak but brief alert before reaching his speed trap location. It sounds like you do a lot of more rural interstate driving. I think that your best protection would be provided by a STi-R and a LI. The STi-R has significantly better K and Ka band sensitivity compared to the V1.

Wow, the STI-R is about double my budget.

I guess what I need is the best dash mount RD for use in Georgia. I had sort of overlooked the STI because RD's aren't illegal here.

Now I'm leaning towards V1 or STI driver.

IMO, Moving Instant On radar is the hardest configuration to beat. If they are closing on you they only need to limit firing to less than 1 shot every two minutes for you not to detect it. For this reason it is a good idea to keep a rabbit (fast car) in front of you.

What kind of vehicle do you drive?
The size of your vehicle effects his clocking range. If you can reduce your radar signature it can help you outbrake a radar shot.

I drive a Dodge SRT-4. From the front it's a VERY tiny car. It looks like a matchbox car next to my wifes Altima

I imagine it doesn't give that much of a radar signature. Probably mostly from the radiator I'm guessing.

Moving I/O is standard procedure for many GSP posts now. Training was offered and from what I heard in a casual conversation some post commanders are demanding officers not activate until they can see the "whites of your eyes". Unless you have a target ahead of you it's difficult to avoid a citation. Best to learn what the county parameters are for citations. In my county, it's 12MPH when the speed limit is above 35MPH. Below that the court typically dismisses so the officers don't write 'em. BTW, GSP can write for 1MPH over but they rarely do in highway situations.

My tack is to not stand out too much on two lane blacktop.

If the sti-r is out of your budget and you drive mostly highway go with the v1. Turn off x-band and pop and your ready to go. Add a laser jammer like the LI and a CB and you will have a highway cruiser . I personally have driven that stretch of road you are talking about several times just some friendly advice.

I agree with rsatmans on this one. If you can't afford the STi-R, which I have in my pickup, then go with the V1 mounted up as high as you can get it. Also pickup laser jammers as soon as you can. When the weather starts to warm they will be using a lot more laser and a detector will not give you enough advance warning.

Here's a video of the 9500ci with an I/O K band shot. The 9500ci and STi-r use the same antenna so results should be similar.
