Default California I-5 drive yesterday with 9500ix

Had a fun time watching my 9500ix during a trip from San Francisco to Anaheim yesterday. I 'found' seven CHP officers on my way down. All were Ka band hits, and all we constant on.

The first was ~15 minutes down on the I-5 from 152. The CHP officer was with a I-5N customer and he left his radar on. He was in a white car, with no lightbar.

The next encounter was ~1 hr down. There were two CHP officers on the side of I-5S It looked like they had just finished up, and their customer was gone. One cruiser was the typical black and white with light bar. The other was a marked white car without the lightbar.

The third and fouth encounters were in Kings and Kern county. Both times were a single CHP cruiser using their radar while they were moving.

The fifth encounter was near Pyramid lake. A single CHP in black and white on the right side of the road. I couldn't tell if he was just hanging out or if he had just finished with a customer. It was dark and the detector found him way before I could have seen him with my eyes.

The final encounter was on I-5 near Glendale. CHP officer with customer who left his radar on.

CHP uses nothing but Ka band and laser, 34.7Ka to be exact.

Nice, the 9500ix eats up Ka 34.7 which is what CHP use. Constant on is very nice of them. Only 7 encounters is not too bad ... I recently had 10 Ka hits in the 200 miles from OC to south San Diego county and back.

How long did the trip take you? I'm taking the reverse trip from OC to SF later this year ... may take the coastal route though.

I was familiar with the frequency. What surprised me was the tactics. I couldn't believe the moving cars with c/o radar. I'm wondering why they don't use i/o more often??

Don't know, but be thankful for it. I/O owns all detectors.

Don't sleep on pacing either ... I think they do as much pacing as they do radar. I got a pacing ticket from a CHP slicktop a few weeks ago.

I/O is work. Takes effort. They have to go the extra mile to use it. C/O is easy. They just leave their radar on and when it reads 81 or higher, they give that guy a ticket. They can write tickets all day long doing just that. Easy as pie.

They dont need to use instant on, due to the volume of speeders. As soon as they get done with one customer and start rolling its time to do a flip and chase down another offender running 15 over in the hammer lane.

Can anyone tell me what to expect along the coast route? Taking PCH to the bay area from LA soon and wouldn't mind a heads up. I haven't gone that way in years but always had good luck when I did.
