By now I am used to the orange construction drones in construction zones, but this is a new one. So I was driving back to the office from working at a new start up satellite office today when I get hit with low power K band radar. I go on the brakes just by instincts. I look in my side and rear view and do not see a cop any where. I did not see any hiding spots. I wanted to know what set it off, so I turned around and tried to find it using the arrows on the V1.
I determined positively that the small weather proof box pictured below was emitting low powered K band. It was aimed at an intersection (which is the reason my V1 jumped to 5 dots or so without warming when I drove into it forward facing). When I pulled 10 feet infront of it, my V1 went full blast. It appears to be some sort of traffic counting device, but I never saw a radar counting device, just the ones that have the lines that you run over on the road. It is a black plastic weatherproof box with a couple of chains and locks on it, but no antennas or windows or visible radar gun on it to see inside. I guess it is getting speeds and amounts of traffic through the box and stores it on some sort of hard drive. The black thing hanging down is just a black strap.
No solar panel or anything, just works on a battery I guess. I guess I could call the number on the box to get specifics about the counter, but what fun would that be? Anyone see these around? I guess the battery life would not be to long and that it doesn't heat up in there.
