    Smile V1 & Virginia?

    Hey all,

I'm using a buddies V1 on my trip from here in PA down to the Outer Banks very soon. Are the V1's invisible to detector detectors that the VA LEO's run, or should I worry about that? I understand they can "physically" see them as well.

    Thanks.

No. The V1 is based off the M4 platform which leaks radar, hence, can be detected by radar detector detectors like spectre and VG-2. The only detectors on the market that are not detected by are the escort redline, stir + and the beltronics sti driver which are all based off the M3 platform. I, however, drove from CT to FL and drove through Virginia with my V1 and was perfectly fine. The likeiness of you running into a LEO using spectre of VG-2, in my opinion, is very slim. There are actually some members on here who have been using a V1 in Virginia for a number of years and never had a problem. However, in the end, the choice is yours. If you did in fact get got the LEO's can do a few things.

1.) A nice leo will write you a citation and tell you turn it off/unmount it.
2.) An asshole leo (majority of them) will confiscate it, and then return it to you once you have paid the citation.

Hopefully this clears things up and remember, it's all about risk/reward. If I were you...well I was in your situation when I drove down to FL, I'd do it.

    Best of luck.

Thanks much, Atticus. I'm going to run it and we'll see how it turns out. My car is a magnet for LEO's (being a certain type of muscle car), but *knock on wood* I have no speeding citations here in PA in the past 10 or so years. Maybe it's my tag, or other related uhm... "things" I don't want to divulge on a public forum ;-) Hope it works. I'll report back in a couple weeks when I return.

Attention Rd.net : Our newest member actually has a brain! If you're as smart as you are on here as you are on the road, you'll be golden in VA! And, I'm hoping this is not your first time using his V1...or a RD in general. They can quite confusing if you do not know the difference between real alerts and false alerts. If you slam your breaks everytime the V1 goes off, you might get to your destination faster without it. Hopefully you've read up on radar/false alarms and laser. If not, let us know and us/me know and I/we will be glad to inform you.

Mike Valentine would kick your a$$ for saying a V1 is based off Escort's M4 platform, LOL. But Yes, it is not immune to the spectre and the VA cops will own you.

VSP has more Spectre RDDs than locals. Keep yours eyes OPEN. Spot one and temporarily turn it off till he is out of view. They look to see if you got a RD stuck to your windshield so a visor mount is a better idea. Hopefully you see him first especially in an unmarked and make it disappear until he is gone.

Thanks much I have several friends who are LEO's (being a FireFighter for nearly a decade helps). They've helped me with a lot over the past years with things like this.

Regarding RD usage: I've had a crappy Cobra mounted in several of my vehicles over the past few years. I got it for free (obviously) - only reason I am using it. Here in PA, as you all know, only State LEO's can use Radar. They use K/Ka bands as well. The POS Cobra has positively ID'd radar from State LEO's on many, many occassions over the past several years. Had I been speeding, it would've probably saved me thousands of dollars of speeding citations, added insurance rates, etc. I have used the V1 a few times in the past. I drove to Vermont and back with one. We also have them on our company vehicles at my work. I am aware of basic functions, but any additional information would be stellar, even some refresher info since it's been just over a year since my last V1 use.

You have V1's in your company cars?! I wanna work for your company!

In a nut shell, the V1 is an extremely sensitive detector. Unless you are driving through New Jersey than you can turn X band off. You can do this by reprogramming it. Here is the guide: How to Reprogram V1 Radar Detector

Other than that, the only other advice I have for you is make sure you use a rabbit (someone who is going faster than you) to detect instant on. If you're speeding on an open highway by yourself, you're asking to get owned by instant on.

I've run the V1 many a times in Canada and VA. Just be alert and be ready to pull the power.
