I mounted a V995 to my 01 VFR last summer and it's still working out well.
I purchased several different types/packages of velcro until I found one that had some really strong glue and strong hook/loop connections. I don't recall the brand. I stuck one big piece to the inside of the cleaned windscreen. Then I attached (hook/loop) and equal-sized piece to it with the sticky side out. I then pressed the (cleaned) suction cups to it as well as the windshield clip.
The RD just attaches to the windshield clip as normal.
The bottom of the RD rests on the dash of the VFR. I also put some small strips of velcro there. One piece stuck to the dash, one stuck to the bottom of the RD.
For dismounting the RD, pull up slightly to disconnect the bottom velcro, then press the button to disconnect the RD from the clip. It's been that way since June '07. Through dozens of 110+ degree days, rain, and mid-30's winter temperatures.
The very top of the tach is blocked, but then again, I'm 6'5", so maybe smaller statured riders would have a better view. A longer RD such as the Escort would block a little more, while the V1 which is a smidgen shorter may give a slightly better view of the tach. With the smoke windscreen, the RD is pretty well hidden to outsiders while riding. I remove it each time I'm stopped somewhere.
The GPS in the photo uses a RAM mount. If I didn't have the GPS, then RAM would be an excellent mount for the RD. RAM also has some dual-mount ideas, but it would have begun to get a bit crowded at that spot for my taste.
