Default OH SH!T Guys!!! New speed clocking system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New speed clocking system could exhaust radar/laser detectors

New Scientist magazine reports that researchers at the University of Tennessee and Batelle Institute have applied for patents on a system that detects the speed of a passing vehicle based on its exhaust note.

The system uses microphones to capture the sound of a passing car, and then filters out all but the sound made by the engine. By measuring the doppler shift of the engine sound as it moves past the speed trap, the system can calculate the vehicle's speed.

While the sound detector is unobtrusive and completely passive (therefore undetectable by a conventional radar/laser detector), identifying speeders will require something a little less stealthy, like a traffic camera. Of course, other early detection systems are possible, like the subtle warning in the accompanying picture.

Hmmm. Sounds like better muffler technology is in order.

That is HALARIOUS, there are whole web pages to the wooo woooo, the pictures, oh my so many pictures making a mockery of everything under the sun. Perhaps I post a thread deditcated to all that in the back alley some time. Not too mention one video of a news reporter, and the guy takes off almost getting into a head on collision trying to show off. Too funny.

Please,.... give me a break. If ever implemented, the thing would be so damn inconsistent it would be a joke.

Think about it. How would it know what gear you are in, your gear ratio transmission/rearened, your tire size, number of cylinders, power/weight ratio, and everything else I didn't mention?

This is a bunch of bull$hit if you ask me.

Exactly, so what if I am in 4th gear doing 70 mph as appose to 5th gear 70 mph.

If it uses doppler shift, it won't matter what gear you're in, or what your exhaust note is, or if you have a whistle tip, or deer whistle, or air horn, as any source of sound from the car (even your stereo) will exhibit the same doppler shift when you pass by the sensor. If you've ever had someone drive by you while leaning on the horn, you've heard what this doppler shift sounds like. The horn sounds higher pitched when the car is approaching you, and lower pitched after it passes by. The shift increases the faster you go.

Other than making a silent car, or at least a car that doesn't emit sound in the frequency range that the sensor records, you could always let off on the gas when approaching the sensor and then floor it after you pass, to throw off the pitch. Or rig a sound maker to the speedometer that offsets the pitch to compensate for the doppler shift. Or just downshift as you're passing the sensor.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?
