Evansville police have a new tool to put the brakes on speeding drivers.
Police say their new Lidar detector can identify and track vehicles from a greater distance than standard radar speed detection devices.
The Lidar can not only tell the officer the speed of the vehicle, but also the vehicle's distance in feet from the unit.
It was donated by independent insurance companies of Evansville, and will be used primarily in school zones.
Police say they plan to start out using the device in school zones like Washington, Lincoln and Harwood, where traffic is heavy and there are multiple lanes of travel in both directions.
