JOHNSTOWN — Following a large-scale increase in motor vehicle related incidents and deaths in 2005, Fulton County Sheriff Thomas J. Lorey has implemented a traffic safety detail which will focus directly on highway safety.

Beginning on June 1, two sheriff’s deputies will be re-assigned to the unit which will operate daily through Labor Day.

Lorey said that as a result of the completion of the 2005-06 D.A.R.E. curriculum, the availability of an additional sheriff’s deputy was made possible for the summer months. As a result, Lorey was able to make the necessary scheduling changes required to create a patrol detail aimed toward increased highway safety.

Through the acquisition of grant funding and donations, state of the art traffic safety equipment including radar, camera and computer devices were added to the traffic detail without cost to the department. According to the sheriff, the newly created traffic safety unit will target safety issues including equipment violations, seat belt use, speeding, aggressive driving and DWI.
