VietNamNet – Hundreds of ineffective speed radar guns valued at around US$5mil have been returned to the Ministry of Public Security.
The Government allowed the Ministry of Public Security to buy radar guns to improve traffic control and ticketing for speeding. The guns were used by traffic officers patrolling highways, but the machines can only measure speed, not record the license plate images of speeding vehicles.
With traffic officers having no real evidence to enforce fines, many drivers refuse to pay. The Ministry of Public Security has therefore had to spend more on providing traffic units in each province with radar guns capable of imaging vehicles and license plates.
The ministry has requested traffic police to return the remaining non imaging radar guns to the ministry. At present, over 1,000 radar guns are stockpiled in the Road Traffic Police Agency warehouse. Each unit is worth $5,000.
