Outrage as traffic warden parks on double-yellows
A traffic warden has been caught parking his van on double-yellow lines while he popped into a cafe for breakfast.
The warden nipped in to have something to eat at a cafe in Marmion Road, Southsea, leaving his van parked illegally in the street for at least 20 minutes.
News reader Angie Gibbs, from Buckingham Green, Buckland, Portsmouth, was in the Cottage Cafe with her daughter when she spotted the warden.
But it was only when she left and saw the city council worker's van on the double-yellows that she became annoyed and took the snaps on her mobile phone's camera.
She said: 'There were spaces available. He could have easily found somewhere else to park.
'I couldn't believe it. He was there for about 20 minutes before we left. I guess he was having breakfast or something before starting his shift.
'If I had parked there, I'm sure I would have been given a parking fine.'
Portsmouth City Council has launched an investigation.
The warden has admitted parking illegally but said it was an emergency as he is a diabetic and needed food urgently.
Charles Stunell, head of transport and street management, said: 'A city council parking attendant has admitted parking with the rear wheels of his van on double-yellow lines.
'Of course, we do not condone staff parking in this way and the matter is being taken very seriously indeed.
'An internal investigation will take place and the matter will be dealt with as rigorously and fairly as any incident involving a member of the public. Any necessary disciplinary measures will then be taken.'
