August 19, 2006

Salem police and Marion County deputies issued 137 speeding tickets Friday during an enforcement effort on the Marion Street Bridge, officials said.

Seven officers from the agencies' traffic units wrote 155 tickets in 3 1/2 hours, Salem police Lt. Bill Kohlmeyer said. Traffic units were out from 8 to 11 a.m. and from 12:30 to 2 p.m., police said.

Other violations for which citations were issued included driving with a suspended license, no insurance and not wearing seat belts, Kohlmeyer said.

The posted speed limit on the bridge is 35 mph. Kohlmeyer said that only one of the drivers ticketed for speeding was traveling slower than 50 mph.

The fine for driving 15 mph above the posted speed limit is $145, Kohlmeyer said.
