Enforcement project to target speeders


PECATONICA ó The Illinois State Police District 16 announced Friday that it will conduct Speed Patrol Enforcing and Educating Drivers throughout the month in Winnebago County on U.S. 20 and Interstate 39.

In addition to watching out for speeders, District 16 troopers will watch for motorists who arenít wearing seat belts and other traffic violations, which contribute to crashes such as following too closely, improper lane use and aggressive driving.

The state police will conduct the patrols in conjunction with regular patrols during September.

Nationally, speed-related crashes account for about 30 percent of all traffic fatalities. In Illinois, 43 percent of all crash fatalities were caused in part to speeding.

Speed patrols are funded through grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation, Nationally Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered by the Illinois Department of Transportationís Division of Traffic Safety.
