7:38 am | DOT installs radar detectors on I-40
Radar detectors in vehicles are beeping these days along Interstate 40 near Raleigh, but they donít necessarily mean a motorist is being watched by police.
The Raleigh News & Observer reports today that the N.C. Department of Transportation has installed 20 automated Doppler radar units on a 27-mile stretch of I-40.
The units are operating from the Chapel Hill exit (U.S. 15/501) to the Lake Wheeler Road exit in Raleigh. They are not being used to watch for people exceeding the speed limit Ė rather, to monitor the flow of traffic.
The DOT uses the units to determine if there are slowdowns on the heavily traveled interstate. But the units activate vehicle radar detectors.
There is no word if the DOT plans to install the devices on any roads in the Charlotte area.
