Dubai: More than 2,000 motorists jumped red signals in 15 days and will have their vehicles confiscated for a week, a senior police official said on Tuesday.

Brigadier Eisa Aman, Acting Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said around 2,738 motorists who jumped red signals since a new order came into effect on August 28 will have to surrender their vehicles for a week.

Dubai Police had ordered that vehicles which jump red signals be impounded for a week. In addition, all such motorists will have to pay a Dh500 fine and will get five black points on their licence. The confiscation period increases with the repetition of the offence.

"There will be no leniency for motorists who jump red signals and all offending vehicles will be confiscated, whether motorists are trapped by the camera or caught by a policeman," Brigadier Aman told Gulf News.

He said Dubai Police have toughened procedures against motorists who jump red signals because the offence leads to horrific accidents, serious injuries and even deaths.
