Auckland police anticipate a 70 percent drop in the number of people running red lights when cameras are installed at some city intersections.

Transport planners are backing a $750,000 pilot project, which would see digital cameras installed at eleven of the city's most dangerous intersections to catch drivers breaking the law.

The city's road policing manager, Inspector Heather Wells, says red light runners are often hard to catch, but the threat of a fine should be enough to deter them.

She says the trial would be deemed a great success if no-one was caught on camera.

Inspector Wells says motorists will have a month's grace once the cameras are installed before the police start issuing fines.
