The Clarksville Police Department's Selective Traffic Enforcement unit recently received a $117,000 grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s Governor’s Highway Safety Office to step up traffic enforcement in North Clarksville and St. Bethlehem.
Because the unit typically works daytime business hours, the funds will help offset overtime costs as they begin working up to 10 p.m.
STEP supervisor Lt. Gary Hurst said the unit will focus increased patrols on Providence, Fort Campbell and Wilma Rudolph boulevards because those roads have some of the city’s highest daily traffic counts. Though that traffic density may not result in a disproportionate number of crashes, Hurst said it “tends to breed more meetings of vehicles.”
Hurst said wrecks on each of those streets exhibit unique characteristics.
More prevalent on Fort Campbell Boulevard, Hurst said, “is euphemistically called failure to yield” — pulling in front of somebody.
Wilma Rudolph Boulevard, meanwhile, exhibits “(what) we euphemistically call following too closely” — a combination of tailgating and not paying enough attention.
