Florida Highway Patrol uses helicopter to chase speeding motorcycle
CHARLOTTE COUNTY -- The Florida Highway Patrol used a helicopter to follow a speeding motorcycle and caught the driver after he stopped for gas in Punta Gorda.
Jeston Lee Morffy, 20, of Key West, reached 150 miles per hour as he sped through Collier, Lee and Charlotte counties on Friday, according to FHP. A pilot started following Morffy after clocking him at 105 miles per hour on Interstate 75 in Collier County, according to reports.
A trooper on the ground tried to stop Morffy, but he refused to pull over.
The FHP didn't follow Morffy on the ground, but the pilot kept the 2005 Honda motorcycle in sight. Morffy stopped three times to see if he was being followed and then pulled into the Circle K at 1161 U.S. 41 in Punta Gorda, according to reports.
Morffy was getting gas when a trooper pulled up. He tried to speed past the patrol car, but was tackled off his bike.
He was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest with violence, aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude, driving while license suspended, and willful and wanton reckless driving. Morffy remained in the Charlotte County jail on Saturday. His bail was set at $40,000.
