Default The record-holder for speeding in Berlin is...we don't know

    http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...any_speeder_dc

BERLIN (Reuters) - A motorcyclist captured on film by German police racing at 155 miles per hour on a road near Berlin has set a new unofficial national record for speeding, Bild newspaper reported Monday.

Travelling more than twice the speed limit, the motorcycle rider was caught on film in a police radar trap near Bad Freienwalde outside Berlin but authorities don't know who the speeder was because motorcycles have no front license plates.

"We are not able to identify him," said Lothar Wiegand, a spokesman for the Brandenburg Transport Ministry in Potsdam.

While German motorists who break speed limits are identified by their license plates in police photos and receive their fines by mail shortly after their infractions, motorcycle riders often escape unpunished.

They do, but there are speed limits there too during certain times of the day and weather conditions. The speed limit is very dynamic in that respect.

Normal roads do have speed limits though.

An autobahn is just another term for "auto road" like an autoroute here or an Interstate in the US. Some of the rural autobahns between towns have no speed limit, or no limit when it's not raining or when it's daytime. However there is still a "suggested" limit of 130km/h. If you go faster, and have a crash, your liability can be higher if you were going faster than 130.

There are also many autobahns limited to 130km/h, or 120 or even 100 - however many 130km/h autobahnen have been upgraded to 160km/h limits, to keep Germany the fastest roads, as Italy also put some new highways at 160. I would expect many of the unlimited portions to get the "suggested" limit to 160 at least, since it seems weird that a limited road you can go 160km/h no problem but on a open road going 160km/h is slightly liability problem.
