Police unveil uniformed mannequin
Officer Dolly has gone on duty.
Police officials today unveiled a uniformed mannequin that will be placed in a patrol car at various locations in west Wichita, hoping she'll slow down speeders.
As drivers come down Kellogg and see a patrol car on the side of the road, "you don't know if it's a real police officer or it's a decoy," said Capt. Joe Dessenberger, commander of the Patrol West bureau.
More than 40 percent of the city's 36 traffic fatalities in 2006 were on the west side, so police are planning a series of initiatives to slow down speeders.
Dolly will be seen in high-traffic areas such as West Kellogg, West 21st Street and Maize Road. After she's been there for a few days, Dessenberger said, real officers will be placed at those locations to monitor traffic violations.
