Six radar units have been purchased for the Houston County Sheriff's deputies to use along the US 431 and 231 corridor and county roads.

They've also received $20,000 in grant money to pay deputies overtime for traffic enforcement.

Sheriff Andy Hughes says this effort is primarily to reduce the accident rate. "Houston County actually receives only $8 dollars for every speeding ticket that a deputy writes,” he explains. “So, we're not just making the county a lot of money, we're not doing it to make money, as some people might think."

Also, traffic enforcement helps catch burglars, murderers, fugitives and drug traffickers once they're stopped for traffic violations.
