FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — Butler Township police and other law enforcement departments will target speeding and aggressive drivers on Route 61 this week as part of a regional program.
At Wednesday night’s township supervisors meeting, Police Chief Edward Tarantelli said the township will participate in the state’s Operation Smooth Operator initiative.
Tarantelli also requested two new part-time police officers be hired, to which the supervisors agreed. He said three part-time officers were hired at the February meeting, but one officer’s paperwork is under review and another officer is being deployed to Iraq.
In other business Wednesday, the township presented a plaque to Cresswell Gardens resident Sarah Umlauf honoring her husband, former supervisor Robert J. Umlauf, for his service to the township.
“Her husband Bob was a dedicated township servant for 18 years,” supervisor Chairman Kevin Kowalick said. “He served as a supervisor for two terms, he retired and then came back for a third term. I guess he didn’t learn his lesson the first time.”
Kowalick presented the plaque to Sarah Umlauf, who said, “He would have liked to have been here to accept this. Thank you. He’s going to be very grateful to receive it.”
Township Secretary Kate Staudenmeier read a letter from Umlauf, thanking the supervisors for the recognition and the residents of Butler Township for giving him the opportunity to serve them for almost two decades.
