Default FL - Pickup truck used to crack down on Milton speeders

Pickup cracks down on Milton speeders

    Milton speeders beware.

That seemingly innocuous white pickup truck you see on the road might, in fact, be a Milton Police Department vehicle clocking your acceleration.

Since being put into service March 1, the truck already has been used to stop 500 traffic violators, said George Holder, whose job title — aggressive driving traffic officer — pretty much says it all.

Actually, the Police Department wants motorists to know about the truck. The object is not to write speeding tickets but to serve as a deterrent to those who might disobey traffic laws.

“This is geared to reducing the number of crashes and the amount of property damage and personal injury by slowing down drivers,” Holder said.

Speeding, particularly along U.S. 90, is the No. 1 traffic infraction in the city.

The 2007 Chevrolet Silverado is equipped with a digital camera, radar, computer system, transport cage and handheld laser. Total value: $54,908. It was purchased using a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation.

The Gulf Breeze Police Department also uses an unmarked pickup truck to enforce traffic laws. That vehicle began operation in 2005.

In Milton, motor officer Mark Tinnirella provides another key traffic enforcement tool as he patrols the city on a motorcycle.

“Traffic enforcement isn’t about how many tickets you write, it’s about how much compliance you can get,” he said.

    .

The old 'it is about safety' song and dance, except they spell "safety" with a "$" is stead of an "S". :!:

If they want to curb unsafe driving keep a visible Police presence on the road , meaning marked cruisers.

If they want to write tickets more tickets, put unmarked pickup trucks on the road.

But you and I already know that, so who are they trying to convince?

Thats just stupid. I would treat that truck the same as I treat off duty LEOs trying to wave their badge at me from their personal car. Just punch it.

There used to be a provision in Illinois law that gave motorists the right not to stop for unmarked cars with flashing police lights, but rather gave the right to wait for a marked Police vehicle to arrive( I can't recall all the details at the moment).

I don't know if that is still in effect, but something tells me if I do not pull over for a unmarked LEO, when his backup in marked cars arrive, they would put me in cuffs & haul me away before asking any questions..

Ok by me. I think it's garbage using unmarked cars for traffic especially off brand unmarked units. I have nearly the same level of distain for that crap as random roadblocks.

    I agree.

I remember a few years ago being stopped by a unmarked crown vic that did not even have municipal plates!

Not having municipal plates is total and complete BS and ought to be illegal.
