St. Cloud drivers need to pay extra attention to their speed this summer. If they don’t, the State Patrol will.

St. Cloud troopers will be watching the roads and enforcing posted speed limits at an increase rate as part of a speed management program.

The program is called Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic, or HEAT, and it pays troopers overtime hours with a federal grant.

A study conducted after last year’s HEAT program showed that the number of vehicles driving over 70 mph decreased by 11 percent on metro-area freeways during the enforcement.

In outstate Minnesota the number of vehicles traveling over 70 mph dropped 29 percent.
