The Times/Katy Mull Ottawa Police Officer Garry Johnson pulls over a vehicle in the 700 block of Columbus Street Wednesday afternoon as part of a speed enforcement check conducted by the department. An Illinois Department of Transportation grant of $8,100 to be used for speed enforcement checks was previously awarded to the department, and the checks will be conducted through Aug. 31. On Wednesday, police issued 32 speeding tickets, four tickets for seat belt violations and one citation for no insurance. Police are targeting areas where a high percentage of Ottawa's speed-related injury accidents occur. A speed check conducted Tuesday netted 10 speeding tickets, one seat belt violation and one citation for no insurance. A check conducted on June 7 resulted in 42 speeding tickets, three warrant arrests and one insurance violation. Police will be surveying the targeted areas in the future to determine if drivers are lowering their speed.
