Worried about being caught on camera speeding through an intersection? Your life is about to get a little easier.

Under a new state law, the City of Albuquerque has begun installing rumble strips to warn motorists that they’re approaching an intersection with a red-light camera.

One set of rumble strips was being installed late Wednesday at the busy intersection of San Mateo and Montgomery.

The installations follow Governor bill Richardson’s signature on a new law requiring municipalities to install either flashing lights or rumble strips to give lead footed drivers a warning they’re approaching a zone where they may get caught.

The city opted for the rumble strips because they’re less expensive than flashing lights.

The law went into effect on June 15th. The City of Albuquerque takes the position that as long as the work was begun by June 15th, the city’s technically in compliance with the law.
