Louisiana public safety officials have announced that they will conduct a “Summer Heat” crackdown on speeders between July 16 and Aug. 19.

As part of the campaign, law enforcement officers from 44 local agencies, sheriff’s offices and state police troops will conduct overtime patrols dedicated to stopping speeders. Federal safety experts estimate that speeding is a factor in 31 percent of fatal crashes, meaning that an estimated 311 people were killed in speed-related crashes in Louisiana in 2005.

Last year, officers issued more than 53,000 speeding tickets in Louisiana during the “100 Days of Summer Heat” campaign. This year’s campaign has been concentrated into the five weeks of summer leading to the re-opening of many schools.
