If you’re heading from Port Charlotte to Punta Gorda next week and approaching the bridge, slow down because the cops may be looking for you.
U.S. 41 between Harborview Road and the Gilchrist bridge is one area that is going to be targeted for speeding patrol by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.
In 2006 there were 68 crashes involving 129 vehicles, injuring 30, killing one and causing $314,190 in damages, the sheriff’s office reported.
The other area where officers will be looking for speeders starting Monday is on the entire length of State Road 31 in eastern Charlotte County. In 2006 there were 52 crashes involving 83 vehicles, injuring 27, killing one and causing $400,650 in damages.
Along State Road 31 and Bermont Road in eastern Charlotte will be monitored for violations of right-of-way. In 2006 there were 32 crashes involving 52 vehicles, injuring 66, causing $375,150 in damages.
Officers will be also be looking for violations of right-of-way on U.S. 41 and Edgewater Drive in Charlotte Harbor. In 2006 there were 19 crashes involving 37 vehicles, injuring 3, causing $64,450 in damages there.
