DRINK and drug driving offences among young motorists have soared by a staggering 75 per cent, police revealed yesterday.
Now worried police chiefs are focusing their attentions on high-spirited young drivers as part of their Summer Safety Campaign which has just kicked-off and runs until, Monday, July 30.
A sharp rise in drink and drug drivers has been revealed in the 17 to 25 age group and police are out in force to catch them.
There will also be high visibility patrols on the look-out for “Morning After” boozed-up motorists.
Officers plan to breath-test drivers involved in all types of road crashes and those stopped for committing other road traffic offences.
Highlighting the problem of young drivers, Traffic boss Chief Inspector Jim Igoe said a 75 per cent rise among young people getting behind the wheel while on drink or drugs is frightening.
He added: “Motorists in the 17 to 25 age group are more at risk of death and injury.
“We need them to realise they are not invincible and need to take time to hone their driving skills.
“They also need to take responsibility for all passengers in their vehicle and ensure that everyone is wearing a seatbelt.”
Police are also targeting speeding motorists over the next few weeks. Officers armed with radar guns will be clocking the speed of drivers in various parts of Paisley and neighbouring towns.
Among the roads expected to be hit are Glencairn Road, Hurlett Road, Hawkhead Road, Lonend, all Paisley, Main Road, Howwood, Glebe Street and Kings Inch Road, both Renfrew.
