Police Step Up Patrols for Labor Day Weekend Click For Video!
Labor Day weekend is just around the corner. And that means many more people will be on the roads this weekend.
Nydia Karkiewicz says, "I was rear ended right here on Miami one night because of that. I was cut off in front, I had to slam on my breaks, the woman behind me was not paying attention and hit me."
It's the reason Nydia Karkiewicz is anything but excited about traveling Labor Day weekend.
More cars will be on the roads, which usually means more accidents.
William Jones says, "You have a lot of drivers that are in a hurry to get to their destinations, you actually have more people that are actually intoxicated because of the holiday weekend. It actually is a lot more dangerous."
Which will keep Indiana State Police Officers, like Trooper William Jones, very busy.
William Jones says, "We actually have guys who are giving up their days off. We're gonna have extra patrols with CARE and other projects, government funded and they're going to be looking for speeders, impaired drivers and trying to look for offenses that cause accidents."
Staci Lugar Brettin says, "Everything from missing turn signals, missing exits, just driving crazy."
Mike Holderbaum says, "There's a lot of road rage."
The exact things, Tire Rack driving instructor, John Rastetter warns all of his students about before teaching them how to avoid those situations.
John Rastetter says, "Make sure they're always looking far enough ahead so that they keep themselves and their passengers safe."
Advice people like Nydia plan to take.
About 150 extra officers will be on patrol statewide looking for people who aren't driving responsibly.
The increased police presence will last through the holiday weekend.
