A new vandal-proof speed camera could be coming to the UK, according to Auto Express magazine. The device stands 4m above the road and features strengthened glass, a fire-resistant body and a stiffened steel base. It is also fitted with smoke and vibration sensors, and if attacked triggers an alarm at the nearest police station and downloads all its digital photographic data so that no evidence is lost. Called IDEE (Innovative Digital Enforcement Environment), the machine also boasts four cameras and invisible, infra-red flash technology. Produced by the Dutch firm Peek Traffic, the first models have just gone live in Holland. Home Office type approval for their use in Britain could take less than a year.
