O'FALLON --
The O'Fallon Police Department this week announced that the department has been awarded a Speed Enforcement Grant funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The $36,000 year-long grant will allow the department to hire back off-duty police officers to conduct extra speed enforcement.

The extra efforts will begin next month. Sgt. Keith Townsend, the department's traffic safety coordinator, said the officers will be highly visible in saturation patrols and safety enforcement zones. The areas selected for the special enforcement are spots where police say speed has been a factor in crashes.

Townsend declined to say which specific areas the police department will focus on.
