The Virginia State Police have a new weapon in their arsenal for tagging drivers who break speed limits. For many years, police have tracked speeders with radar mounted inside the patrol vehicles. LIDAR, or the Light Infrared Detection and Range device, incorporates technology developed for the space program and weather tracking applications. Troopers can use it to pinpoint one vehicle in a large group of travelers. Motorists may have seen officers aiming the new device at speeders along Interstate 81 this year.
