Cape Coral police will be watching drivers from the sky.
Itís called an Aviation Speed Enforcement detail, and itís going to take place along several major roadways.
Spokeswoman Dyan Lee said at some point during the daytime hours this week, a pilot and observer will be circling above the roadways watching for speeders, tailgaters, those weaving in and out of traffic and those running red lights.
The pilots radio the information they receive to patrol cruisers on the ground below. The goal is to deter unsafe and aggressive driving.
ďStatistics on speeding show it is one of the most prevalent factors contributing to traffic crashes,Ē Lee said. ďIn fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the most recent statistics available from 2005 show speeding was a contributing factor in 30 percent of all fatal crashes.Ē
