Arkansas Highway Police are joining other states in the region Wednesday to step up enforcement targeting speeders and aggressive drivers.
State Highway Police Chief Ron Burks says officers will have a more visible presence on Interstates 30 and 40 and will be giving citations to unsafe drivers.
According to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, speeding and aggressive driving relate to the highway deaths of about 43,000 people every year. Burks says officers want to make it clear that driving defensively and in a cooperative way will make for safer roads for everyone.
Other states in the campaign include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
