TRAFFIC: Richland police to crack down on speeders
By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer
Richland police will be cracking down on drivers speeding, following too closely to vehicles in front of them and committing other traffic offenses on one of the city's main streets.
The traffic emphasis begins this week on George Washington Way near Columbia Point Drive.
The area was targeted for extra enforcement after officers noticed a high number of traffic infractions and collisions in the area since January, Capt. Mike Cobb said.
Officers investigated 16 crashes from Jan. 1 to March 17 on the southern part of George Washington Way, he said.
They have also seen an increase in the number of infractions issued for speeding, improper lane travel, vehicles following too close and failing to yield.
The effectiveness of the project will be evaluated throughout the emphasis, and a formal re-evaluation will be completed by April 30, Cobb said.
