Over the month of Austin, the Austin Police Department will increase enforcement of speeding as part of its seasonal Safe and Sober Campaign, according to Austin Police Chief Paul Philipp.

“Because speed is tied to accidents,” he said of the effort. “We know that.”

From April 1 to April 30, the department will assign officers specifically to speed patrol, using grant dollars designated for the campaign.

Philipp said the department typically does safe and sober sweeps four times annually. They focus on a variety of violations, from speeding to seatbelts and drunken driving.
