State Highway Patrol plans speeding crackdown

The state Highway Patrol will crack down on speeders next week on the interstates and major four-lane highways across the state.

The Governor’s Highway Safety Program and local law enforcement agencies across the state will be conducting No Need 2 Speed in conjunction with Operation Slow Down, says a Highway Patrol news release.

Speed is the leading cause of traffic fatalities and collisions in the state, the release says. Troopers will use motorcycles, Dodge Chargers and unmarked patrol vehicles.

The program starts Monday and ends April 6.

A kickoff press event with state officials will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway near Charlotte.

The “No Need 2 Speed” campaign will run through Sunday, with state troopers focusing primarily on Interstates 40 and 85 locally, according to Sgt. C.S. Holland of the Highway Patrol.

Troopers will be in marked and unmarked vehicles as well as motorcycles on places like bridges over highways.
