"Destination: Safe" Agencies Launch Aggressive Driving Enforcement

CommunityHeavy patrolling April 1-15 will ticket speeders, reckless drivers, safety belt violators

Kansas City, MO - infoZine - From April 1 to through 15, drivers will see an increase in police enforcement to curb aggressive driving in the Kansas City region. Aggressive driving leads to crashes that injure or kill hundreds of people in the metro area every year, making it a high-priority - and preventable - traffic safety issue. Aggressive behaviors at the wheel include speeding, driving too fast for conditions, and following other vehicles too closely.

Using a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), the Kansas City region's "Destination: Safe" coalition joins 21 local law enforcement agencies to deter aggressive driving behaviors. Motorists caught speeding, changing lanes without signaling, driving on roadway shoulders, or displaying other aggressive driving behaviors will be ticketed. In addition, drivers stopped and not wearing safety belts will receive an additional ticket. During the last aggressive driving enforcement effort in December 2007, law enforcement agencies stopped 2,213 people, ticketing 1,169 for speeding or following too closely. Hundreds more were caught violating traffic signs and signals or driving carelessly.

The following agencies will be actively patrolling area roadways during the campaign:

    Bates City Police Department
    Belton Police Department
    Clinton Police Department
    Grandview Police Department
    Harrisonville Police Department
    Henry County Sheriff's Department
    Independence Police Department
    Jackson County Sheriff's Department
    Lake Winnebago Police Department
    Lone Jack Police Department
    North Kansas City Police Department
    Oak Grove Police Department
    Oakview Police Department
    Odessa Police Department
    Parkville Police Department
    Peculiar Police Department
    Platte City Police Department
    Pleasant Hill Police Department
    Pleasant Valley Police Department
    Raytown Police Department
    Smithville Police Department

These agencies will coordinate traffic enforcement efforts by car or aircraft. Additional enforcement agencies in Missouri and Kansas will also participate. Drivers should obey all traffic laws, wear safety belts and ensure children are properly restrained in a child safety seat or booster seat.

The Independence Police Department received a $46,400 grant from MoDOT to buy a police vehicle specially equipped for aggressive driving enforcement and also for overtime pay to conduct enforcements in the I-70 corridor. The vehicle will be on display April 2, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Blue Ridge Bank and Trust, 4200 Little Blue Parkway, Independence, Mo.

"Destination: Safe" is a collaborative effort to prevent transportation fatalities and injuries in the Kansas City region, in cooperation with the Missouri "Arrive Alive" and Kansas "Safe Not Sorry" safety campaigns.
