Federal grants administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation have aided crackdowns on Will County speeders and seatbelt and child safety restraint violators in Kankakee, Ford and Iroquois counties.

Lt. Jeff Blaire, operations commander for District 21 State Police at Ashkum, said a grant funded the crackdown on seatbelt violators March 6-27. Patrols funded by the grant resulted in 114 citations and 50 written warnings.

In Will County the sheriff's police are using the grant to fund extra patrols aimed at nabbing speeders. The special patrols began April 1 and continue through the month, said Sheriff Paul Kaupas.
