'Stop speeding before it stops you'

Speeding contributed to 19 of the 106 fatal crashes reported last year in Delaware.
So police and highway officials kicked off their speed enforcement campaign today in an attempt to see that number decrease this year.
Motorists can now be on the lookout for police cracking down on speeders throughout the summer on Del. 1, U.S. 40, I-95 and secondary roads in all three counties.
“We are committed to this endeavor and will focus our troopers in areas that have been identified as high crash sites involving speed,” said state police Col. Thomas MacLeish.
Motorists stopped not only get a ticket for speeding, but are subject to from two to five points for driving 1- to- 20 miles or more over the posted speed limit, said Andrea Summers, spokeswoman for the state Office of Highway Safety.
Points on motorists’ licenses opens the door to higher car insurance rates.
According to the federal Department of Energy, motorists who speed use more gas.
Every five miles over 60 mph a motorist drives, it’s an additional $.20 cents per gallon of gas.
“With the price of gas these days, you can’t afford to waste if,” said Tricia Roberts, the agency director.
Because just about everybody speeds, people have forgotten how dangerous speeding is and how much it can cost in loss of life and injuries.
“Stop speeding before it stops you,” Roberts said.
In 2007, 62 percent of the fatal crashes in Delaware were caused by aggressive driving behaviors with speed the most frequently cited.
That’s why the crackdown this year focuses on speed, Summers said.
A poll taken in the spring by AAA suggests that 66 percent of respondents favored increased police enforcement for aggressive or reckless driving and speeding.
Beginning this week, additional officers will be out on the roads and visible, conducting speed enforcement.
The state police, along with Dover police, Wilmington and New Castle County will be participating in the enforcement effort.
