State police have added 89 devices that use laser technology to help troopers catch speeding motorists. They say the new devices are better than ones already being used and will allow troopers to increase efficiency.
State police issued a total of 66,864 speeding tickets in 2007. During the first six months of this year, they issued 37,615, an increase of 16 percent for the same period last year.
The total cost of the 89 new devices is $167,720, paid for by a state Department of Transportation highway safety grant. They will be distributed to all patrol troops and the agency's Traffic Services Unit.
