A handful of motorists discovered Wednesday that making excuses for speeding through a construction zone won't prevent a law enforcement officer from writing a ticket.

Numerous drivers were stopped as part of a crackdown on Highway 41, said Capt. Jon Guzmann of the Fond du Lac Police Department. He said city officers don't usually patrol the highway, but grant money has made it possible.
He added that other law enforcement agencies along Highway 41 are also curbing speeding, so drivers should watch the lead foot.
But three motorists learned the hard way at about lunchtime on Wednesday. All were issued tickets for speeding through construction on Highway 41, according to Fond du Lac Police Department records.
Police stopped a 34-year-old Brookfield man at 11:36 a.m. for driving 70 mph in a 55-mph zone. According to a police report, he told the officer he was traveling what he thought was the posted limit of 45 mph.
At noon, officers stopped a 20-year-old Hurley woman for going 70 mph in a 55-mph zone. According to police documents, she told the officer she had bought the car an hour prior to the incident and was having trouble reading the speedometer because the numbers varied from 45 to 65.
Twenty minutes later, police pulled over a 35-year-old Milwaukee man for driving 71 mph, according to a police report. He told the officer he was driving 65 mph — 10 miles over the posted limit of 55.
