Default Space-age speed traps coming to Gainesville

"You can beam a signal up and down that will make people's radar detectors go off, 24/7, and we are going to try to use that to pull down the speed," Oelrich said. "The people who drive 20 mph over the speed limit universally have radar detectors."

Commissioners liked the idea but wanted more.

"We need something that makes people's speedometers go down artificially," Commissioner Mike Byerly said.

And then they can write even more tickets!

Whatever happened to the FCC minimizing electromagnetic pollution?
If I lived in Gainesville, I'd wear a garbage can lid on my head when I went outdoors. Perhaps Commissioner Mike has already been irradiated.

Coming from someone who used to live in Jacksonville and drive down 301 to Gainesville on a monthly basis, I can safely say that Gainesville is a walk in the park compared to Starke, Lawtey, and especially Waldo.

Are they talking about drones? 'Cause the FCC has already approved that. With sufficient money you could just do what was done on that stretch in California and install as many as you can get your hands on. Radar detectors = owned. (And you can cook a hotdog for free by holding it out the window!)

Given the amount of instant-on and laser on the highway these days I think I'm headed in that direction. I won't give up my V1 but I definitely have my eye on a new toy, probably sooner rather than later.
