Three new red-light cameras activated in San Diego

SAN DIEGO — Drivers, beware. Three new red light photo cameras have been installed at intersections in San Diego and were activated Friday.
Motorists who speed past red lights at these intersections will receive a warning from authorities – but only for a month.
Citations, which carry a minimum $436 fine, will be issued to drivers captured by the red light cameras next month once the grace period is over, police said.
The new intersections are at Camino del Rio North at Qualcomm Way; Cleveland Avenue at Washington Street and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard at Convoy Street.
The camera systems are mounted on poles and sensors are buried in the pavement. Police said the system is activated when the signal turns red and a vehicle crosses into the intersection.
Authorities said the cameras photograph a vehicle from the front and back. The system is designed to operate only after a signal has turned red. It is meant to create a safer environment for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians, police said.
The city has 11 red light camera systems throughout the city.
The others are at the following intersections: A Street at 10th Avenue; Garnet Avenue at Mission Bay Drive; Grape Street at North Harbor Drive; Aero Drive at Murphy Canyon Road; Camino del Rio North at Mission Center Road; El Camino Real at Del Mar Heights Road; Mira Mesa Boulevard at Scranton Road and 10th Avenue at F Street.
