BLOOMINGTON -- A Bloomington police officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the out-come of an internal investigation into his arrest on drunk driving charges.

William McGoniglePatrol officer G. William McGonigle, 35, of Normal, was stopped by an Illinois state trooper at 2:21 a.m. Saturday at Route 51 and Kerrick Road in Normal.

McGonigle, a six-year veteran of the department, was charged with speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol, state police confirmed Thursday. He was released on bond.

The McLean County clerk’s office had not received the traffic citations Thursday afternoon.

Interim Bloomington Police Chief Randy McKinley said the investigation is underway “to see if there were any violations of policy, rules or regulations.”

McKinley said the administrative investigation could take a couple of weeks.
