The new Chairman of the Federal Road Safety Commission Governing Board, Col. Lawan Gwadabe (rtd), on Tuesday warned road users to obey traffic laws or face the music.
Gwadabe said this at the inauguration of the FRSC board and that of the National Hospital, Abuja Management Board by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, on Monday.
He said over one million people died in the world annually as a result of road auto accidents
He said, “No longer will we look the other way while road users violate traffic laws with impunity through over speeding, overloading, drug abuse and use of mobile phones while driving.”
The former Military Administrator of Niger State said, “A situation where powerful individuals engage in reckless beating of traffic lights, climbing of walkways/ pavements and harassing law enforcement agents cannot be tolerated.
“Discipline, he added, “must be infused into road users for visitors and tourists to have confidence to use our roads.”
He appealed to the executive, the legislative and the judiciary to cooperate with the board.
On the running of the FRSC, Gwadabe said the board under his leadership would ensure credibility and accountability, adding that the it would contribute to the achievement of the government’s seven-point agenda and the Millennium Development Goals.
