VietNamNet Bridge – Ha Noi police have punished thousands for traffic violations over the past few days as part of the city's new campaign to prevent congestion on the roads.
Violators are fined or have their vehicles temporarily confiscated depending on the severity of the violations.Major traffic violations causing traffic jams included illegal parking, going through red lights and encroaching lanes, said Nguyen Hoang Linh, deputy director of the Ha Noi Transport Department.
Violators are fined or have their vehicles temporarily confiscated depending on the severity of the violations. Fines range from VND40,000 (US$2.5) to 14 million ($875), depending on the infraction, according to Dao Vinh Thang, deputy head of the Ha Noi traffic police office.
Since the beginning of the campaign last Thursday, traffic police handled nearly 500 cases of violations, taking in more than 50 cars and removing hundreds of temporary tents and advertisements encroaching on the street, reported transportation inspectors.
Meanwhile, municipal traffic police reported they had handled over 700 cases of violations and kept hundreds of vehicles.
"Specific locations where traffic congestion is an everyday occurrence are being heavily patrolled," Thang said.
"Police are also working to adjust the frequency of traffic lights in some locations to improve the efficiency of traffic management in preventing and controlling traffic jams," he said.
According to statistics from the municipal traffic police office, the city has around 120 "hot spots" for traffic jams, including 29 in Dang Da District, 28 in Hai Ba Trung and Hoang Mai districts and 14 in Thanh Xuan District.
