Lawmakers propose red light cam ban
Chris Miller Reporting
A couple of New Orleans lawmakers want the state to ban the cameras used to catch people speeding and running red lights in New Orleans, Jefferson Parish and other parts of the state. State Representatives Cedric Richmond and Jeff Arnold have pre-filed a bill to outlaw the cameras.
Algiers representative Arnold says the cameras violate due process.
"They try to lighten it by saying, 'well, look, it's not a criminal offense, you're only being charged with a civil offense, so it won't go on your permanent record for your insurance or anything,' and I just think it's a money grab by the municipalities," said Arnold.
New Orleans, Jefferson Parish and Lafayette are among local governments that use the cameras. If approved, municipalities and parishes would have to deactivate their systems by Jan. 1, 2010.
