New Red Light Cameras Snap Local Speeders
Insert Caption Here Law enforcement officials are warning local motorists to stop at red lights or risk being caught on camera speeding through local intersections. Thanks to red-light camera legislation passed recently by state lawmakers, Queens motorists could see a significant increase in the snap-action cameras that catch motorists in a variety of violations.
Sponsors of the new legislation, which calls for the installation of 150 new cameras citywide, said the city’s “Red Light Camera Program” has so far resulted in more than 4 million violations issued to motorists who failed to stop for red lights since the program’s inception.
The latest available statistics show that in 2007, the city Department of Transportation (DOT) issued approximately 950,000 “Notices Of Liability” to owners of passenger vehicles, cabs and buses.
Sponsors of the bill argued that city DOT statistics show violations at intersections with red light cameras have decreased by up to 60 percent, resulting in far fewer accidents at the intersections.
The city Red Light Camera Program was established in 1993 with the installation of cameras at 50 intersections throughout the five boroughs. The program was expanded in 2003 to a total of 100 cameras citywide. More than $73 million in fines to date has been paid by the owners of vehicles caught speeding through red lights.
The process is simple: cameras snap an image of a vehicle license plate as the motorist speeds through a red light. The city mails a “Notice of Violation” to the registered owner of the vehicle, which can result in a $50 fine. DOT officials can put the brakes on owners who fail to pay three or more fines, prohibiting them from re-registering the vehicle cited in the violation.
Law enforcement sources said that DOT officials have recently installed several new cameras along Northern Boulevard from 50th Street to Bridge Plaza North in Long Island City.
“They’re out there,” the sources said. “Just watch for a flash of light as the car ahead of you speeds through a red light.”
